The most difficult edit of my career - I kept crying
Over 18 years behind the camera, you capture countless moments, but some images stand apart from the rest. I visited the Ankilivalo community in Madagascar, where the local school was nearly destroyed and in severe disrepair; children attended classes without the basic necessities we often take for granted. They navigated their education without pencils, notebooks, or proper uniforms.
Amidst this environment, I photographed a young girl whose face told a profound story. Her eyes are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen, yet they carry a deep, quiet sadness. You can see this striking presence in the images. While capturing the scene, her teacher even rushed over to try to arrange her badly worn clothes - a small but telling act of care in an incredibly challenging situation.
This experience serves as a clear reminder of the realities many face daily. When confronted with such profound resilience despite the complete lack of basic educational tools and clothing, the two appropriate responses are deep gratitude for the blessings and privileges we have been given and helping them in any way possible.
kind regards
Muji
